A bonded retainer is a thin metal bar placed behind the teeth after orthodontic treatment to keep teeth in place
How do you keep them clean?
We recommend regular hygienist visits as well as maintaining good oral hygiene by ensuring you are brushing twice daily (we recommend an electric toothbrush) and using interdental brushes such as tepes or floss.
Can anyone have a bonded retainer?
Anyone is eligible for a bonded wire on the lower teeth. The upper teeth will be dependent on your bite. If you have a deep bite there may not be room to place an upper wire (you would end up biting onto it and it breaking)
Will it be visible?
No, it sits behind the front teeth by your tongue and/or palate of your mouth, so the only people who will see it will be your dentist and hygienist.
What happens if it breaks?
Your bonded retainers will be monitored at your recall appointments, they are under warranty for one year, however if it breaks after then it can easily be bonded back on in a short appointment with your dentist.
How long do they last?
A bonded retainer can last for 10 years or more if you care for it properly, which is significantly more than some other types. If your fixed retainer breaks prematurely, a repair might be possible. This will cost less than a replacement.
Do I have to wear my removable retainer as well?
Fixed retainers are effective at preventing the front teeth from shifting. However, they may not fully address changes in the position of other teeth. Removable retainers, which cover the entire arch, provide comprehensive coverage and help maintain the alignment of all teeth.
Will I feel it/will it get in the way?
you will feel it with your tongue, however you get used to the feeling within a few days of having it cemented in place.
How much does it cost?
The bonded wire is included in our Invisalign packages so there is no extra cost. If you would like a bonded wire separate to invisalign it is £205 per arch.
